The Little Things

Far too often people don’t notice the little things. Those little things that go the long distance.
Your spouse puts a note in your lunch or travel bag… it always seems that right when you’re missing home, you get that note and everything seems closer, not so far away. It’s a little thing but big effect.
Someone sends you an email to say they were thinking about you and your family when your mom was in surgery. Stuff like that goes a long way.
You get a song gifted to you through iTunes and you gift again to someone else. People love that.
You bring home a flower or a gift to your significant other and you do it for no reason. Small gesture but big effect.
A person, a complete stranger, asks you to zip up their blue body suit for you and you do it without hesitating… ok that’s just weird.

Life seems to be made up of little tiny moments. A lot of those moments seem insignificant and meaningless. Chances are that’s probably true.

I live a life in production. I do it for work, I do it for fun and I just do it. I love looking at how a production can be broken down into little pieces so that it can make the whole project much easier.
For instance, a recent project I got to be a part of, I broke it down into a feel simple parts (I’m going to go through this project on a deeper level in the coming weeks), but here’s what it looked like from start to finish:

We started off with ideas, screen shots, a bunch of notes and a meeting. Then we moved onto drafts for a script (since it will be driven by a voice over and moving text) and worked our way through 3-4 drafts.

I started putting together an initial draft of the final product with just music and timed elements of the words. I left voice overs to be done later, just in case we decided to cut any of the text… which we ended up doing because timing was so fast in the 30 second spot.

When I put the piece together I created a large (5000×5000 composition above) that I could put in the 1080p version (below) that way I could easily manipulate a camera movement for the crazy layers of text (thank you Andrew Kramer for teaching me this)

Then I put together a nice little draft and posted it online for the client to check out. I’ll be posting the final product when it’s all said and done.

So when I look back at this project while I’m in the middle of ending it… (could I give any other time references in this sentence?) I see how many little steps it took to make it. I’m also sure as I continue to learn production steps, tips and tricks, I will find a few more little things I can do to improve the end product.

There are a lot of other little things that went into this project that I didn’t share: my scrap pieces of paper, the voice over, the examples I looked at for ideas, my time sitting staring at my screen wondering how to make it work (yes, sitting stare at a screen can help you even though it doesn’t look like work) and more.

What little things are you working on today that plays out in the bigger picture of things?

Cheers,
Matthew A. Hawkins

And the Winner Is…

A few weeks ago I shared with you our entry for the Cineplex Ford Flex Contest:

Well after patiently waiting and having no idea who entered or what was going on, I received an email and phone call letting us know we were finalists.

FINALISTS? What did that mean? I had to answer a skill testing question and then wait some more. I just wanted to know if we won!?!?

After much waiting (a weekend) I couldn’t take the wait, so I emailed Cineplex to ask if we had won…

WE DID! I got a phone call first thing on Tuesday morning saying we were selected as the Grand Prize winners.
I cannot begin to tell you how excited we are about this. I have entered a number of video contests and the best we’ve done was honorable mentions or thank you prizes. Now I can say we’ve won a nation wide contest.
Aside from the bragging rights, the loot is pretty amazing too! CHECK OUT OUR PAGE ON CINEPLEX. {just to be clear, we won passes, a camera and moola – no car. though I’d love to talk with Ford about doing a family commercial ;) thanks for making me clarify this Sarah!}

Enough of me tooting my own horn. If you think you’ve got something to share with everyone, but people so “no way” or “you can’t make it”, don’t listen to them. They don’t know you or what you can do. go for it. make it happen.

The Brown Family

A very fun night at Castle Fun Park in Abbotsford, BC.
Mini-golf, bumper cars and slurpees. The Brown family was a lot of fun to get in front of the camera. Enjoy!

The Brown family run Revival Arts Studio – catch them there – revivalartsstudio.com

And here’s their amazing video:

Fresh Gear in Trail BC

Just over a month ago I got to attend an open house at the Royal Theatre in Trail BC. The Royal was opening it’s doors to share some very exciting news for their theatre and the community of Trail. 3D and digital projection is coming to this fixed up and fabulously redone theatre!!! I was able to attend for the 1 hour open house to talk about the effectiveness of on screen advertising and be available to talk with any local business owners. It was a great afternoon and a long one day road trip that I got to take with my wing-man, my father-in law AKA pops!

On that day I got to meet a bunch of great people, one of those being Shaun. Shaun works and plays in the Trail area, but he also has a side company he’s started up called Kootenay Fresh Gear – check him out on Twitter & Facebook
It’s a great new company that will help my hockey gear out A LOT! I wish I had known about these guys a long time ago. If you’re a sports player (soccer, football, hockey) or even a firefighter or someone who uses the same work gear a lot, you need to check these guys out. They can kill the bacteria in your gear and get the smell out – there are only a few locations in BC and obviously a great one in Trail!

What Shaun wanted to do for his ad in the theatre was something fun and straight to the point. We played a lot of email and Twitter tag, but we came up with something I think we are both really happy with. Shaun was the first to get an ad on at the Royal and I think it’s going to be a great form of exposure for him. Check his ads out below:

Helicopter Firefighting

I was on my way out of Keremeos and I saw some smoke in the air. My first thought was that the highway was closed because of a forest fire and I would be driving home through Kelowna… long drive.
The highway was open and I got some great fruit and veggies too, BUT when I left Keremeos I got to watch a forest fire in it’s beginning stages and I saw a great helicopter fight it. Check it out:

Why I was in Keremeos or driving through it… that’s all to come soon enough.
